Three faculty members are on sabbatical for all or part of the
2000-01 academic year.
- Sigurd Angenent
- is on sabbatical all year at the University
of Leiden (The Netherlands). There he is collaborating with
R.C.A.M. van der Vorst on problems in classical mechanics, and
with J. Hulshof on asymptotics of singular solutions in nonlinear
hear equations. In addition, he is connecting with working groups
on medical imaging and computer vision in Utrecht.
- Steve Bauman
- is also on sabbatical all year, spending
most
of his time in Madison. A graduate seminar in the teaching of
mathematics at the university level has been meeting these last
couple of years, and Steve is trying to develop a
course on this topic. Thus Steve is joining with other efforts on
campus in the scholarship of teaching science, engineering, and
mathematics. Steve is also thinking about issues connected with
the topic of quantitative literacy.
- Richard Brualdi
- has completed his Fall, 2000-01 sabbatical,
having spent most of his time in a basement study in central
Vermont. His primary project, which continues, was the writing of
a research monograph ``Combinatorial Matrix Classes,'' a sequel to
his book ``Combinatorial Matrix Theory'' with H. J. Ryser.
In addition to these sabbatical leaves, there are quite a few
other people on leave for the entire academic year: Franc
Forstneric (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia), Alexandru Ionescu
(MIT), Gloria Mari-Beffa (University of Leiden, the Netherlands),
Robin Pemantle (Stanford University), Panagiotis Souganidis
(University of Texas at Austin), and Thaleia Zariphopoulou (University of
Texas at Austin). On leave in the spring semester are Anatole Beck (London
School of Economics, England) and Arun Ram (Isaac Newton Institute for
Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge, England)
