- Sergio Fajardo [PhD 1984, H. J. Keisler] has
recently been elected
mayor of Medellin, Colombia. He has been a Professor of Mathematics at
the University of Los Andes in Bogota, but Medellin is his
home city. He ran as an independent and, according to the news reports,
his election was a surprise.
- Daniel Kalman [PhD 1980, J. Harvey] was awarded
two MAA Writing Prizes at
MathFest (the MAA's annual summer meeting) in 2003. For his paper ``Doubly
Recursive Multivariate Automatic Differentiation'' (June 2002, 187-202) he
was given the Carl B. Allendoefer Award for expository articles published
in Mathematics Magazine. For his paper ``An undetermined linear
system for GPS'' (November 2002, 384-390) he was give the George Pólya
Award for expository articles published in the College Mathematics
Journal.

Matthew Boylan [PhD 2002, K. Ono] a VIGRE
Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
was awarded the Best Talk Prize by a Junior Number Theorist
at the West Coast Number Theory Conference in December 2003.
Warren P. Johnson [PhD 1993, R. Askey] was
awarded the MAA's Lester R. Ford Award at the MathFest in 2003.
This award for expository writing in
The American Mathematical Monthly was given for his article ``The
curious history of Faà du Bruno's Formula'' (March 2002, 217-234).
William G. Leavitt [PhD 1947, C. C. MacDuffee] has achieved a pinnacle that
many of us can only dream about. He has now published mathematics papers
in eight decades. His first article was based on his Masters
Thesis and was published in The American Mathematical Monthly
(1939). His most recent article ``On b-classes'' was published in
Acta Math. Hungar. (90 (2001), no. 3, 243-252, and was written
jointly with H. France-Jackson. Bill mentioned that his wife Jane was a
secretary in the department when they got married. The then department
chair, Mark Ingraham, had to get a special waiver of nepotism rules so
that
they could get married in December 1941. Fortunately we have come a long
way since then.
