Edward F. Moore died on June 14, 2003 at age 77. Ed received his Mathematics PhD in 1950 from Brown University. Before coming to Madison in 1966 as Professor of Mathematics and Computer Sciences, he worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories in New Jersey. Professor Moore was one of the founders of Automata Theory where the Moore Machine is named after him. In graph theory, certain metrically regular graphs are called Moore graphs. Their existence is known except for the possible Moore graph with values d = 2 and k = 57 of the parameter set (d is the diameter and k is the degree of regularity). Ed Moore was one of the contributors to the early development of the Department of Computer Sciences. He was also active in the local branch of the National Speleological Society and the Bat Conservation International.
