Hyperbolic Surfaces
It is sometimes difficult to convey the beauty of higher mathematics to the general public. But some mathematical objects have an artistic quality which can be easily appreciated even by people with non-mathematical interests. Gabi Meyer, a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at UW who is also an artist, uses mathematical motifs in her work. Two of her crocheted hyperbolic surfaces won the Ella Gardner Award (2010) and the Waukesha Creative Arts League Award (2011) from the Wisconsin Regional Arts Program. These surfaces will also be shown at the Art Exhibit of the Joint Mathematical Meetings in Boston in January, 2012. Here is a video of Gabi and her work.
