The National Research Council (NRC) has recently completed its rankings of academic programs in the US. The factors taken into account by the NRC were faculty reputation, research productivity, and quality of the graduate program. The UW-Madison Mathematics Department has performed very strongly in this exercise. We ranked in the 7-16th place bracket among all National Universities. This ranking is a reflection of the strength of the Wisconsin mathematics tradition, which continues to attract talented faculty and graduate students.

The UW Mathematics Department also ranked 12th among all Mathematics Departments around the world in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
