These members of our department also retired in 2011.

Yvonne Nagel Yvonne Nagel will retire at the end of the Fall semester 2011, after 23 years of service to the Department of Mathematics as an Information Processing Consultant (Senior IPC since 1998). Yvonne has a B.Sc and a M.Sc in Mathematics from Colorado State University and completed her Ph.D. in Mathematics at UW-Madison under the direction of Hans Schneider (1975).

In 1984 she launched her IPC career as Programmer and Systems Administrator for the UW Army Mathematics Research Center, later renamed the Center for Mathematical Sciences.

When Yvonne was hired as IPC in the Department of Mathematics, the Math computer staff consisted of one half-time permanent position (Yvonne) and three student hourly helpers. Only a few faculty members had computers, and spam existed only in sandwiches! In the early years (circa 1986), the system consisted of (partially) donated equipment that was not reliable or even linked by ethernet. Under Yvonne's leadership, the department computing facilities have grown and evolved to meet the needs of all the faculty, staff and graduate students. She has served approximately 160 faculty, 30 staff and 900 graduate students. In addition, she has supervised 28 people including undergraduate students, graduate students and full-time IPC staff.

Yvonne enjoys many activities, including sewing, travel, photography and history. She is looking forward to spending more time with family, and especially her grandson Joey Gauss Schnagel. Yvonne is a person who will be missed by each and every department member, and we wish her all the best in retirement.

Linda Rice Linda Rice joined the UW Math Department back in 1975 right out of East High School Work-Study Program. She has worked here first as an Office Machine Operator back when we were using stencil machines, offset presses and older versions of the Xerox machines, later progressing up to an Office Associate. When she retired in 2011, Linda had been with us for over 35 years. We could always depend on her being in the office and ready to help, through all sorts of weather, as long as the buses were running. Linda has a daughter Martha and a son Scotty, each married with two children. She will spend a lot of her time with them in the coming years and we all wish her a happy retirement and many enjoyable moments in the midst of her family.
